Wo die Fluten leise ziehen
Und der Wald vom Berge rauscht,
Hab' den alten Melodien
Lang und einsam ich gelauscht.
Manche halb verklungne Weise
Schlug mir wieder an das Ohr,
Aus den Fluten tauchte leise
Manch ein liebe Bild hervor.
Und dein Antlitz, schön vor allen,
Kam mir sacht emporgetaucht,
Und die Luft begann zu wallen
Wie von Lieb und Lenz durchhaucht.
Und vom Walde kam ein Grüßen
Weich und mild, als sängest du
Wieder mir mit deiner süßen
Stimme jedes Leid zur Ruh!
J. Lang sets stanza 1

Where the waters quietly flow
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Where the waters quietly flow
And the forest soughs from the mountain,
I listened long and lonesomely
To the old melodies.
Many a lay that had half faded
Struck my ear once more,
Quietly from the waters emerged
Many a dear image.
And your face, more beautiful than any other,
Gently rose up for me,
And the air began to flutter
As if suffused with the breath of love and springtime.
And from the forest came a greeting,
Soft and gentle, as if with your sweet voice
You were once more singing
Every sorrow of mine to rest!
