Ich ging durch lachende Auen
Language: German (Deutsch)

Ich ging durch lachende Auen
Den Berg entlang,
Kaum sichtbar hoch im Blauen
Die Lerche sang,
Am Schlehdornstrauch rieselt leise
Die Blüten herab;
Der Bach nimmt sie mit auf die Reise
In's Meeresgrab.
Ich füllt' meine Thränenquellen
Und wusst es kaum:
So fiel zerpflückt in die Wellen
Vom Glück mein Traum.

I walked through smiling meadows
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I walked through smiling meadows
Along the mountain,
Barely visible up high in the blue
The lark sang.
From the blackthorn bush the blossoms
Flutter quietly down;
The brook takes them along on the journey
Into the ocean grave.
I filled the wellsprings of my tears
And was hardly aware of it:
Thus, plucked to pieces, my dream of happiness
Fell into the waves.
