Horch! das Feuerglöcklein gellt: Hinterm Berg, Hinterm Berg Brennt es in der Mühle! Schaut, da sprengt er wütend schier Durch das Tor, der Feuerreiter, Auf dem rippendürren Tier, Als auf einer Feuerleiter! Querfeldein, durch Qualm und Schwüle, Rennt er schon und ist am Ort! Drüben schallt es fort und fort: Hinterm Berg, Hinterm Berg, Brennt es in der Mühle! Der so oft den roten Hahn Meilenweit von fern gerochen, Mit des heil'gen Kreuzes Span Freventlich die Glut besprochen - Weh! dir grinst vom Dachgestühle Dort der Feind im Höllenschein. Gnade Gott der Seele dein! Hinterm Berg, Hinterm Berg, Rast er in der Mühle! Keine Stunde hielt es an, Bis die Mühle borst in Trümmer; Doch den kecken Reitersmann Sah man von der Stunde nimmer. Volk und Wagen im Gewühle Kehren heim von all dem Graus; Auch das Glöcklein klinget aus: Hinterm Berg, Hinterm Berg, Brennt's! - Nach der Zeit ein Müller fand Ein Gerippe samt der Mützen Aufrecht an der Kellerwand Auf der beinern Mähre sitzen: Feuerreiter, wie so kühle Reitest du in deinem Grab! Husch! da fällt's in Asche ab. Ruhe wohl, Ruhe wohl Drunten in der Mühle!

Vedete alla finestrella, là, di nuovo il berretto rosso? Ci deve essere qualcosa di strano, perché va su e giù, e ad un tratto, che confusione sul ponte, verso i campi! Senti! La campanella del fuoco annuncia: dietro la montagna, dietro la montagna, va a fuoco il mulino! Guardate! Eccolo, in furioso galoppo, oltre la porta, il Cavaliere del fuoco, sulla bestia scheletrita come su una scala di fuoco! Attraverso i campi! Tra il fumo e il calore corre ed è già arrivato! Laggiù continua a scampanare: dietro la montagna, dietro la montagna, va a fuoco il mulino! Tu, che così spesso il rosso bagliore a miglia di distanza hai percepito, con il legno della santa Croce hai esorcizzato le empie fiamme - bada! Là dall'impalcatura del tetto ghigna contro di te l'infernale nemico. Dio abbia pietà della tua anima! Dietro la montagna, dietro la montagna, si precipita nel mulino! Neanche un'ora passò, e il mulino cadde in pezzi; ma l'ardito Cavaliere nessuno lo vide mai più. Gente e carri in confusione tornano a casa dopo tutto quell'orrore; anche il suono della campanella si spegne: dietro la montagna, dietro la montagna, va a fuoco! Tempo dopo, un mugnaio trovò uno scheletro col berretto ritto accanto al muro della cantina in groppa allo scheletro del cavallo: Cavaliere del fuoco, come gelido cavalchi nella tomba! Un soffio: e cadde in cenere. Buon riposo, buon riposo, laggiù nel mulino!
