Note: this is a saying ("Spruch") that first appeared in Wandsbecher Bote, 1775, No. 75, p. 300; and then in the Musenalmanach, 1777, of Johann Heinrich Voss, who may merely have claimed Luther said it. It also appears in a poem by Voss titled "An Luther". L. Waldmann's song Luther's Wahrspruch also refers to it.
