Er spricht ihr von [Ehre]2 und heirath sie nicht;

The canteen girl
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A maiden has fallen in love with a cadet;
He speaks to her of [honour]1, but does not wed her.
When the cadet swings the flag
[Her heart swells]2 with joy.
[When the drummer beats the drum]3
It means: Soldiers, you must march into the battlefield!
Sometimes we have no money, [sometimes]4 we have no bread,
Oh [you wondrously]5 lovely maiden, you must suffer great hardship!
Sometimes we have no bread, sometimes we have no money,
[Oh you]6 wondrously lovely maiden, that's how [it goes in]7 the battlefield!
[And when]8 the enemy comes and kills us off,
You stay with the army and remain nice and pious.
