O könnt' ich doch die Nachtigall Drei kleine Worte lehren! Dann sollte dich ihr süßer Schall Im Morgentraume stören. Sie setzte vor dein Fenster sich Und kaum begünn's zu tagen, So hörtest du sie schlagen : "Er liebet dich!" Ich suchte längst die Nachtigall Im Hain, an Murmelbächen, Und oft ließ ich den Wiederhall Die kleinen Worte sprechen. Doch Philomele weigert sich, Sie lieblicher zu schlagen, Drum muß ich selbst dir sagen : "Ich liebe dich!" Entzündend tönt's der Nachtigall Aus sanfter Silberkehle, Und ihres Sanges Wonneschall Bezaubert jede Seele: Doch kann sie nicht so wonniglich Für meine Seele schlagen, Als hört' auch ich dich sagen : "Ich liebe dich!"
