Erschlaffenden gesang der violine
Der wie der menschheit fernes qualgezisch --
Mehr als dies alles schätz ich - tiefe flasche -
Den starken balsam den ich aus dir nasche
Und der des frommen dichters müdheit bannt.
Du gibst ihm hoffnung liebe jugendkraft
Und stolz - dies erbteil aller bettlerschaft
Der uns zu helden macht und gottverwandt.

quando la sua bellezza contempla bagnandosi nell'acqua
L'ultimo tallero sul tavolo da gioco
Un bacio audace alla magra Adelina
Il suono snervante del violino
simile al rantolo di tutto il dolore umano
Più di questo mi è caro - mia profonda bottiglia -
il balsamo potente che da te ricavo
e al buon poeta la fatica toglie.
Tu gli infondi speranza, giovinezza e amore
e pure orgoglio - comune patrimonio di tutti gli umili,
che in eroi ci trasforma e agli dei ci fa simili.
