Hinterm Lindenbaum,
Hinterm Lindenbaum,
Da wächst weiches grünes Gras
Auf dem Wiesensaum,
Wie im Sommertraum
Oft ein rotgelocktes Mädel saß.
Hat an ihn gedacht,
Hat an ihn gedacht,
Zogen blaue Jungen übers Feld,
Und sie hat gewacht,
Bis zur späten Nacht,
Bis die Stern am weiten Himmelszelt.
Mond auf Mond verging,
Mond auf Mond verging,
Und sie sitzt noch immer hinterm Baum,
Dran kein Blatt mehr hing,
Das der Wind noch fing;
Doch sie weint und merkt es kaum.
Hinterm Lindenbaum,
Hinterm Lindenbaum,
Da liegt weicher, weisser Schnee,
Auf dem Wiesensaum,
Wie im Wintertraum,
Stirbt ein namenloses Herzensweh.

Folk song
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Behind the linden tree,
Behind the linden tree
Grows soft green grass,
Upon the edge of the meadow,
As if in a summer dream,
A maiden with red curls often sat [there].
She thought of him,
She thought of him
When blue-jacketed lads came across the field,
And she kept watch
Until late into the night,
Until the stars [appeared] on the wide canopy of heaven.
Moon upon moon has passed,
Moon upon moon has passed,
And she still sits behind the tree,
Upon which no leaf hangs any longer,
That the wind could catch yet,
But she weeps and hardly notices.
Behind the linden tree,
Behind the linden tree
Lies soft, white snow,
Upon the edge of the meadow,
As if in a winter dream
A nameless heartache dies.
