Čí je to ditko? kam se tam ubirá, když od severu věje led a sníh? když na hřbitově půlnoc leží šírá? co chce to dítko tuto na hrobich? Matko, matíčko, jdu sem nyní ktobě, děvečka tvá to, slyš opuště nou: tys pryč odešla, ležíš tuto v hrobě o proč mi dáváš jinou matku, zlou? Ta matka jiná zlořečí mi, hřímá, a pryč vyhání ven dcerušku tvou, a můj tatíček, ten si mne nevšímá ach! má matíčko, zastaň ubohou! Plakalo dítko studené perličky, perličky jemu očka stížily; i sklonilo se na hrob své matičky a lůžko bílé sněhy přikryly! I spalo dítko, spalo sen radostný: u své matičky mní se viděti, i slyší hlásek, její milostný: Pojď, pojď má děvečko, pojď v mé objetí! I spalo dítko spalo sen tichounký aniž ji jitro ze sna zvolalo: i vykopán mu hrobeček nízounký, tu kde si před tím bylo ustlalo!

Wess' ist das Kindlein, das so einsam schreitet, wenn fern vom Norden weht so kalt der Wind? Wenn auf dem Feld die Nacht ihre Flügel breitet? Was sucht am Grabe hier das verwaiste Kind? Liebes Mütterlein, dich will ich heut sehen, ich bin verlassen, sehne mich nach dir! Hör' mein brünstig flehn dort im kühlen Grabe ach eine and're Mutter gabst du mir? Fremd ist die Mutter, flückt mir jede Stunde, und aus dem Hause jagt sie mich in Sturm und Wind. Und mein Vater hört nicht diese Klagen ach mein Mütterlein komm zu deinem Kind! Thränen und Perlen weinte das Töchterlein, und seine Augen drückte Leid und Weh' es neigte sich hin, wo seine Mutter schlief das weisse Lager deckt der weiche Schnee! Und einen süssen Traum schlief das arme Kind bei dem Mütterlein glaubt es nun zu sein! Lieblich ertönt die Stimme aus dem Grab: Komm' komm' an mein Herz, mein Kind, ewig bist du mein! Da schlief es ein und ruhte aus ungestört Der Morgenschein erweckt' es nimmermehr; ein weiches Grab ihm wurde da gewährt wo es im Leben klagend seufzte schwer.
