Die Hand, die zitternd in der meinen lag
Am Maientag, als weit die Amseln sangen,
Die heimlich mir, ein unbewußt Verlangen,
Im Garten einst die frische Rose brach.
Die mir, wenn staubbedeckt der heiße Tag
In Mannespflicht und Arbeit war gegangen,
Am weißen Arme blitzen Güldenspangen,
Den kühlen Trunk kredenzte im Gemach.
Die liebestill manch Hinderniß entrückte
Und breite Sorgenströme überbrückte,
Die treue Hand, die schöne, anmutreiche.
O laß sie ruhen einst auf meinem Herzen,
Wenn ich verlasse dieses Land der Schmerzen,
Daß ich gesegnet bin, wenn ich erbleiche.

Cette main qui, tremblante, était dans la mienne
À la fête de mai, tandis qu'au loin le merle chantait,
Un jour dans le jardin, elle me cueillit secrètement
Une rose fraîche, inconsciente envie.
Lorsqu'après les obligations et le travail des hommes
Se terminait la chaude journée poussiéreuse,
Elle me proposa dans la salle une boisson fraîche,
Des bijoux d'or brillant à son bras blanc.
Cette main fidèle, belle, pleine de charme,
Avec amour éloignait calmement bien des contraintes,
Et surmontait le large flot des angoisses.
Ô, laisse-la un jour se poser sur mon cœur,
Quand je quitterai cette terre de souffrances,
Pour que je sois béni, quand je blêmirai.
