Bruder, Schwester und Fremde
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Serbian (Српски)
Available translation(s): ENG
[Schmückte]1 mit Laub ein Wäldchen sich,
Bruder und Schwester waren drin,
Sprach zu dem Bruder [die Schwester so]2:
«Bruder, was kamst so lang' Du nicht?» -
«Wäre gekommen längst zu Dir;
Aber die Fremde läßt mich nicht,
Sie, die Fremde, das gute Kind.
Sattele oft mein gutes Roß;
Aber die Fremde sattelt's ab!»
Gürte den scharfen Säbel um,
Aber die Fremde schnallt ihn ab;
"Wohin, o Liebster, gehest Du?
Breit und lang ist die Ebene!
Tief ist das trübe Wasser, tief!
Gehe nicht, Liebster, gehe nicht!"»

Brother, Sister, and Stranger
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A little wood adorned itself with foliage,
A brother and sister were within it.
The sister spoke to the brother thus:
"Brother, why did tarry so long with your coming?" -
"I would have come to you long ago;
But the stranger does not let me,
She, the stranger, the good girl.
I often saddle my good steed;
But the stranger takes the saddle off again!
I often gird myself with my sharp sabre,
But the stranger unbuckles it again, [saying]:
«Whither, oh my beloved, are you going?
Broad and long is the plain!
Deep is the murky water, deep!
Do not go, beloved, do not go!»"
