Because I could not stop for Death
Language: English
Available translation(s): DUT FRI
Because I could not stop for Death --
He kindly stopped for me --
The carriage held but just ourselves --
and Immortality.
We slowly drove -- he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labour, and my leisure too
For His Civility --
We passed the School, where Children
At Recess -- in the Ring --
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain --
We passed the Setting Sun --
Or rather -- He passed Us --
The Dews drew quivering and chill --
For only Gossamer, my Gown --
My Tippet -- only Tulle --
We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground --
The Roof was scarcely visible --
The Cornice -- in the Ground --
Since then 'tis centuries; but each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses' heads
Were toward eternity.

Ik koe net stopje foar de Dea
Language: Frisian  after the English
Ik koe net stopje foar de Dea --
Dat freonlik stoppe Hij foar mij --
Yn 't rydtúch sieten wij allinne --
Mei noch Unstjerlikheid derbij.
Wij rieden stadich -- want Hij hie
Gjin haast, en fuort al hie
Ik staakt al wat mij dwaande hold,
Om't Hij sa hoflik tsjin mij wie --
De skoalle rieden wij earst lâns,
Mei bern -- dy boarten op it plein --
De lannen lâns mei stoarjend nôt --
De lege sinne noch foarbij --
Of leaver -- Dy kaam ús foarbij --
De dauwe moast ik doe fan skrouskje --
Sint-Janstried wie mar myn japon --
Fan tinne tule mar myn jakje --
Wij holden foar in hûs - it liek
In sljochtwei bultsje op 'e grûn --
It dak wie amper mar te sjen --
De daklist - yn 'e grûn --
Sûnt doe -- 't is ieuwen lyn -- en toch --
It fielt noch koarter as de dei
Doe't ik earst rette dat de hynders
De kop hien' rjochting Ivichheid.
