Es war mir im Herzen so leicht und so wohl;
Von meiner Geliebten, holdselig und mild;
Die Nachtigall sang, und es rauschte der Bach;
Schon bebte durch Erlen der Mond auf dem Bach;

Song
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I walked under alders at the cooling brook,
And thought indeed of this and that:
My heart felt so light and happy;
But my eyes became filled with tears.
From the susurrant waves the image of my beloved
Wafted forth, lovely and gentle;
Then I sank into the swelling moss on the bank,
My tears plunged down into my lap.
Now I lay in the shadow beside the cooling brook,
And thought indeed of this and that:
The nightingale sang, and the brook rippled;
I thought of this and only this.
Already the clouds flamed in reddening beams,
The browner shadows already sank into the valley,
Through the alders, the moon already trembled upon the brook;
I thought of this and only this.
Now I tottered away from there with weeping eyes,
And looked back to the brook and alders:
They vanished; but the lovely image that ever and ever
Fills my soul, did not vanish.
