De vogels springen door de heg En zingen uit den treuren; De Mei strooit bloesems langs den weg, En klopt aan alle deuren, En zie! daar komt bij 't [blij]1 geluid Het jonge volk de huizen uit. Gij, kinders! zat een' winter lang Te kleumen en te treuren; Nu lijkt die lieven vogelzang Uw hartjes op te beuren; Komt, zingt en springt dan nu om strijd, Zoo flink alsof gij vogels zijt. En zingt gij laag en zingt gij hoog, En zingt gij uit den treuren, En ziet gij aan des Hemels boog De voorjaarsnevlen scheuren, Denkt dan [aan onzen lieven]2 Heer, [Die]3 bloesems geeft en Lenteweêr. Mijn vogelkoor, mijn kinderkoor, Dat 's beter dan te treuren! Zingt vrij en blij uw Lente door Bij zonnenschijn en geuren, [En denkt]4 -- ook als gij ouder zijt -- "Na winterdagt komt Lentetijd!"
