Und soll es wieder sein geschieden

Nimm hin! Ein Theil von meinem Leben
Geht mit dir und ist ewig dein.
Und, willst du den mir wiedergeben,
So mußt auch du mein eigen sein.

Farewell
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
And are we to be parted again,
When your eyes have barely smiled upon me?
So easily is one's peace shattered,
And ah, so difficult to bring back!
And must then, when kindred souls
Have finally met for once,
Must one immediately steal itself away from the other?
Is there no happiness that can last?
I am to forget those hours
That bestowed anxiety and joy upon me?
And shall that which I felt so deeply
Be plucked away like a flower?
In vain I seek to compose myself.
Oh do not look at me while you depart!
And even if you can leave me calmly,
Only know that I cannot do it!
Accept it then! A part of my life
Goes with you and is eternally yours.
And if you wish to return it to me,
Then you, too, must become my own.
