Ich weiß es wohl und spotte viel:
Ihr Mädchen seid voll Wankelmut!
Ihr liebet, wie im Kartenspiel,
Den David und den Alexander;
Sie sind ja Forcen miteinander,
Und die sind miteinander gut.

Doch bin ich elend wie zuvor,
Mit misanthropischem Gesicht,
Der Liebe Sklav, ein armer Tor!
Wie gern wär ich sie los, die Schmerzen!
Allein es sitzt zu tief im Herzen,
Und Spott vertreibt die Liebe nicht.
