O, wär' ich vom Berge der junge Aar, 
Und schwäng' gleich dem Wetter mein Flügelpaar, 
Dann würd' ich, Suleika, schnell tragen dich fort,
Hinauf in mein Wohnhaus, auf's Felsenmeer dort! 
Deine Speise wären Wolken, und Strahlen dein Trank! 

O, wär' ich ein Kampfroß, das stolz und leicht 
Durch Fluten und Auen wie Sturmwind fleucht, 
Dann würd' ich, Suleika, dich bringen in's Thal,
Wo freier das Blachfeld durchströmt der Ural! 
Deine Speise wären Blumen, und Düfte dein Trank! 

O, wär' ich ein Raubthier im dunklen Wald,
Und wären die Höhlen mein Aufenthalt,
