You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

In der Gondel gestern Abend

Language: German (Deutsch) after the Italian (Italiano)

In der Gondel gestern Abend
Ich mein schönes Blondchen führte;
Vom Vergnügen, das sie spürte,
Sank in Schlaf das arme Kind;
Schlief, an diesem Arme liegend,
Und ich weckt' es immer wieder,
Doch der Nachen, leise wiegend,
Wiegt' es wieder ein gelind.

Von dem Himmel, halb enthüllet
Aus Gewölkchen schaute Luna
In die spiegelnde Laguna,
Und zur Ruhe ward der Wind.
Nur ein einzig Lüftchen säuselnd
Trieb mit ihren Löckchen Spiele,
Hob den zarten Schleier kräuselnd,
O wie reizend war das Kind!

Leise leise schaut' ich nieder
Auf das Antlitz meiner Holden,
Auf die Locken golden golden,
Auf den Busen athmend lind.
Und ich fühlte süße Gluten
In der Brust, wie soll ich sagen?
Stille ringsum auf den Fluten!
O wie rann die Nacht geschwind.
