Liden Fugl paa vor Vej Havde travlt med at synge Sin Elskovssang; I hver Bøgetræsgynge Var Legen i Gang. -- Nu synges, nu leges der ej. Kun de susende Graner har endnu Røst, Og det lyder som oprørt Vand; Det tegner mod Høst. Elskede! ak, den dobbelte Klang, Som strider i denne Kalden: Sangfuglelatter fra korngul Vang Og hulkende Skovvandes Falden! O, wie altschwer ist jeder Tritt, wenn zurück der Weg wird getreten; Leicht war der Schritt, und jugendlich frisch, als es ging gegen glückliche Zeiten. Klein Vogel am Weg hatte viel zu thun mit seinem Liebessang; durch die Buchen erschallte Jubel und Klang, jetzt singt es, jetzt klingt es nicht mehr. Nur der rauschenden Tannen tiefes Gestöhn tönt herüber wie ein wogendes Meer, der Herbst zieht heran. Geliebte! Ach welch' einen doppelten Klang vernehm' ich in diesem Rufen; Vögelgelächter aus goldigen Korn und das Seufzen der Waldegewässer! Der Sommer flog fort, nur der Herbst blieb zurücke, ein ärmlicher Herbst; Nur ein Abglanz vom Glücke mit spärlichem Trost, ein fahles farbloses Bild. Und ich press' das verblichene Blatt an den Mund sie birgt doppelte streitende Lust die Abschiedsstund. Nein, ich will nicht wie ein Klagender steh'n, wenn Nichts doch lässt sich verändern; Lieber die herbstgelben Wege geh'n, wenn doch diesen Pfad ich muss wandern. Kraft hat die Luft, die mir athmet entgegender Tannenhain, es schimmert, es glüht in der Herbstsonne Schein, jede Blume hat stärkeren Duft. Mag der Lenz nur verstummen, ein Keim sprosset hie, Es liegen noch Lieder im Herzen; sie sterben, sie sterben nie.
