You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

O Vöglein auf dem Baume

Language: German (Deutsch) after the Chinese (中文)

O Vöglein auf dem Baume,
Du fliegest frei hinaus,
Es wächst in jedem Raume
Ein Körnlein deinem Schmaus.

Du weißt es klug zu naschen
Aus Netzen selbst und Maschen;
Du lässest dich nicht haschen,
Und lachest fröhlich deinen Laurer aus.

O Vöglein auf dem Baume,
Du fliegest froh dahin;
Es reifet Kirsch' und Pflaume
Dir einzig zum Gewinn.

Du bist in diesem Lande
Der einz'ge frei von Stande,
Frei von des Kummers Bande;
O daß ich hätte deinen leichten Sinn!

Ich lieg' in schwerem Traume
Von nichts als Fahr und Noth.
Ich schweb' auf einem Baume,
Der stets zu brechen droht;

Und unten ringsum wachen
Mit ausgesperrten Rachen
Die Tiger und die Drachen;
Und wenn ich falle, fall' ich in den Tod.

O daß ich könnt' erwachen,
Alswie aus einem Traum, aus dieser Zeiten Noth!
