All überall, all überall,
Am Boden, in der Luft,
Im Blumenschmelz, im Wasserfall
Das Bild mir winkt und ruft.
Nun zieh' ich schon so manches Jahr
Im Lande hin und her,
Und war einst jenes Bild mir klar,
So ist es jetzt noch mehr.
Manch freundlich Wort, manch schön Gesicht
Betäubt mein Aug' und Ohr,
Doch jenes Bild verlier' ich nicht,
Bis ich mich selbst verlor! --

How beautiful is the world around me
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
How beautiful is the world around me,
How glorious, light and great,
But however much everything pleases me,
There is one thing of which I cannot get free.
Everywhere, everywhere,
On the ground, in the air,
In the flowery lustre, in the waterfall,
Her image beckons and calls to me.
Now for many a year already
I travel hither and yon in the land,
And if I saw that image clearly once,
I now do so even more.
Many a friendly word, many a lovely face
Numbs my eyes and ears,
But I shall never lose that image
Until I lose myself! --
