Dreams give what the day concealed; At night when one’s will is conquered, Freed powers strive upward, Following divine premonition. The forest soughs and the river rushes, and through The night-blue sky of the animated soul sweeps sheet lightning. What is within me and what outside me Is not separate; the world and I are one. Clouds waft through my heart, The forest dreams my dream, House and pear tree recount to me The forgotten saga of our mutual childhood. Rivers resound and chasms cast shadows within me, The moon and pale star are my trusted playmates. But the gentle night, Which inclines itself over me with soft clouds, Has the face of my mother, Kisses me smilingly in inexhaustible love, As in olden times it shakes Its beloved head dreamily, and its hair Billows through the world, and within it The thousand stars tremble in pale startlement.
