Auf dem Hügel nah' dem Städtchen
Ragt die Linde himmelwärts,
Ihr zu Füßen weilt ein Mädchen,
Weint und klagt in heißem Schmerz.
Ihren Liebsten muß sie sehen,
Blanker Waffe angetraut;
Liebchen will vor Leid vergehen
Ob der neuen fremden Braut.
"Weine nicht, nehm' ich in Schmerzen
Auch mein neues Lieb zur Hand;
Trennt der Krieg doch nicht die Herzen,
Bleiben sie doch beieinand'!"

The conscripted one
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Upon the hill close to the little town
A linden tree stretches up toward heaven,
At its foot a maiden tarries,
Weeps and laments in deep pain.
She is forced to see her beloved,
Betrothed to a shiny weapon;
The darling wishes to perish from misery
Because of the new, strange bride.
"Do not weep, though I in pain
Take my new beloved in my hand;
War does not separate our hearts,
They nevertheless remain together!"
