Und wie ein Jahr verronnen ist,
Sein Knöspchen zart Schön-Röslein küßt,
Es ruht, gewiegt von Mutterlust,
Mit Augen blau, an ihrer Brust.
Es lächelt und die Händchen langen,
Als wollt's die Mutterlieb' umfangen;
Sie aber schaut durch Tränenflor
Mit heissem Dank zu Gott empor,
Nimmt still die Ros', ihr Lebenspfand,
Und giebt's dem Kindlein mit zitternder Hand.
Rose:
Nimm hin mein Glück, du kleines Herz,
Ich geh' beseligt heimatwärts;
Mein ward der Erde Seligkeit,
Nach dieser giebt es keine Freud';
Leb' wohl, mein Kind; - du treuer Mann,
Zu End' ist meine Pilgerbahn,
Ich scheide ohne Schmerz und Weh',

Das ist kein bleicher, schwarzer Tod,

E' trascorso ormai un anno,
la piccola rosa bacia teneramente il suo bimbo,
che riposa, cullato dalla gioia materna,
con occhi di cielo, sul seno di lei.
Sorride il bimbo e tende le manine,
come se volesse abbracciare la sua mamma;
Ella lo osserva attraverso un velo di lacrime
piange di gioia e ringrazia il Signore,
prende in silenzio la rosa che la protegge,
e la passa al suo bimbo con mano tremante.
Rosa:
Tienila tu, mia gioia, mio cuoricino,
ritorno felice dove iniziò il mio cammino;
è stata mia quella felicità terrena,
dopo la quale non esiste gioia più piena;
Addio, bimbo mio; addio fedele marito,
il mio pellegrinaggio adesso è finito,
io lascio questo mondo senza dolore,
perché nella gioia io sto per partire.
La mia non è una morte pallida e oscura
morendo vado incontro a una nuova aurora.
