O Einsamkeit! Wie sanft erquickst du mich,
Wenn meine Kräfte früh ermatten!
Mit heißer Sehnsucht such' ich dich:
So sucht ein Wandrer, matt, den Schatten.
Hier weine ich. Wie schmähend is der Blick,
Mit dem ich oft bedauert werde!
Jetzt, Tränen, hält euch nichts zurück:
So senkt die Nachttau auf die Erde.
O daß dein Reiz, geliebte Einsamkeit!
Mir oft das Bild des Grabes brächte:
So lockt des Abends Dunkelheit
Zur tiefen Ruhe schöner Nächte.

Sii tu il mio conforto, intima tristezza!
in te trovo rifugio pieno di ferite,
mai piansi la mia pena davanti a chi è felice:
come tace il malato davanti a chi è in salute.
O solitudine! Con quanta dolcezza tu mi dai ristoro,
quando ogni mia energia già si fiacca.
Con nostalgia struggente io ti cerco:
come un viandante che, stanco, cerca l'ombra.
Qui posso piangere. Quanto mi offende lo sguardo,
col quale spesso qualcuno mi compiange!
Adesso, lacrime, io non vi trattengo
come la notte che sulla terra versa rugiada.
Possa il tuo incanto, amata solitudine,
portarmi spesso l'immagine della tomba!
Come l'oscurità che, quando si fa sera,
ci invita alla quiete profonda di una bella notte.
