Sang das Mägdlein von der Liebe
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Sang das Mägdlein von der Liebe,
Froh und bang zugleich,
Sang von Liebe, sang von Leide,
Kamen heimlich alle beide,
Küßten ihm die rothe Wange,
Ward sie gar so bleich.
Winkt das Mäglein nachts den Sternen,
Winkt den Wolken zu:
"Wollet sacht hernieder schweben,
Schlummer mir und Frieden geben --
Müde bin ich, ach, so müde,
Sehne mich nach Ruh . . ."
Wolken wandern, Sterne bleichen,
Ruhlos schweift der Wind.
Schneller wandern Lieb und Treue --
An die Thüre klopft die Reue,
Klopft mit ihrem dürren Finger:
"Mach mir auf, mein Kind!"

Sang the maiden, sang of love
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Sang the maiden, sang of love,
Happy and anxious at the same time,
Sang of love, sang of suffering,
Both came secretly,
Kissed her red cheek,
She became so pale.
The maiden beckoned to the stars at night,
Beckoned to the clouds:
"Would you gently waft down here,
Give me slumber and peace --
I am weary, ah so weary,
I yearn for rest . . . !"
Clouds scud, stars grow pale,
The wind roves restlessly.
Love and faithfulness wander every more hastily --
Rue knocks at the door,
Knocks with its scrawny finger:
"Open up, my child!"
