Von dem Gartenaltan keucht zum Schloße heran Der Woywode, voll Wut und voll Schrecken, Reißt die Vorhänge fort Von dem Ruheort Seines Weibs, leer liegen die Decken! Auf den Boden er starrt, In den greisigen Bart Seine Hände, die bebenden, packen. Wild hebt er den Blick, Wirft die Ärmel zurück, Rufet Naum, den treuen Kosacken. "Ha! elender Wicht, Warum waren mir nicht Heute Nacht in dem Garten die Hunde? Die Jantscharke nimm dir, Und reiche auch mir Die gezogene Büchse zur Stunde!" Als vollbracht die Geheiß, Schlichen beide sich leis Zum Altan an der Mauer Rande. An dem traulichen Ort Was leuchtete dort? Ein Weib ist's in weißem Gewande. Eine Hand läßt vom Haar Ihrer Augen Paar, Läßt die Brust von Linnen umschliessen; Mit der anderen Hand Hät sie von sich gewandt Einen Jüngling zu ihren Füssen. Und umfangend ihr Knie, Beschwöret er sie: "Hab ich alles denn, alles verloren? Hat den Händedruck auch Und der Seufzer Hauch Der Woywod sich zu eigen erkoren? Ich, der ich manch Jahr Treu-eigen dir war, Soll dich meiden und sehen dich nimmer? Er liebte dich nicht; Doch das Gold hat Gewicht: Du verkauftest ihm alles auf immer! Ich eilte zu dir, Von dem treuen Tier Durch Sturm und Wetter getragen! Um mit Seufzer und Kuß Dir zum Abschiedsgruß Gute Nacht auf immer zu sagen!" Sie widersteht, Wie er klagend auch fleht, Daß sie seines Leids sich erbarme; Bis die Kraft ihr entschwand In der wehrenden Hand, Und sie hinsank in seine Arme! Vom Gesträuche versteckt, Auf den Boden gestreckt, Der Woywod und der Diener liegen, Ziehn die Ladung hervor Und lassen ins Rohr, Vom Ladstock getrieben, sie fliegen. "Herr!" flüstert es sacht, "Mich hemmt eine Macht: Ich kann auf das Mädchen nicht schiessen; Als den Hahn ich zog, Mich ein Schauer durchflog, Und zur Pfanne sah Tränen ich fliessen." "Still, Heiduckensohn! Lehre weinen dich schon! Nimm hier Lissaer Pulver zum Zünden! Mache schnell den Stein Mit dem Nagel rein, Dann ihr Ziel laß die Kugel sich finden! Höher!... Rechts!... Halt' still! Ich selber erst will Den Brätigam strecken zu Boden!" Der Kosack legt an, Zielet fest, spannt den Hahn, Und trifft ins Herz den Woywoden.

Dalla terrazza del giardino Arriva affannato al castello Il Voivoda, pieno d'ira e di terrore, scosta le cortine del letto della sua consorte, e non trova nessuno! Cade a terra, e si strappa la barba grigia con le mani che tremano. Volge sguardi selvaggi, si rimbocca le maniche, chiama Naum, il fedele cosacco. "Ah, disgraziato, perché non c'erano stanotte i miei cani in giardino? Prenditi la scimitarra, e portami anche il fucile pronto, subito!" Eseguito l'ordine, i due strisciarono piano piano sulla terrazza, al limite del muro. In quel luogo ameno, che cosa vedono? Una donna in vesti bianche. Con una mano scosta i capelli dagli occhi, e copre il seno coi lini; con l'altra mano vorrebbe allontanare un giovane che sta ai suoi piedi. E abbracciandole i ginocchi, lui la implora: "Dunque ho proprio perduto tutto, tutto? Anche la stretta di mano E l'aura dei sospiri, appartiene tutto al Voivoda? Io, che per tanti anni Ti sono stato fedele,, devo andarmene e non vederti mai più? Egli non ti ama, ma l'oro ha il suo peso: tu hai venduto tutto a lui per sempre! Io venni da te, portato dal mio fedele cavallo attraverso tempeste e uragani! Solo, con un sospiro e un bacio, per darti l'addio, per dirti buonanotte per sempre!" Ella si alza, vedendolo piangere e gemere, perché ha pietà del dolore di lui; fin che la forza non le viene meno nella mano con cui vorrebbe difendersi, e cade fra le sue braccia! Nascosti fra i cespugli, stesi al suolo, stanno il Voivoda e il servo, mettono la carica nel fucile e la spingono avanti nella canna con la bacchetta. "Signore! -- mormora il cosacco -- Mi trattiene una forza: io non posso sparare alla fanciulla; appena ho alzato il cane, ho avuto un brivido, e ho visto scorrere una lacrima." "Zitto, figlio d'un turco! Ti insegno io a piangere! Prendi la polvere da sparo! Fai presto a pulire la pietra Col chiodo, e poi lascia che la pallottola arrivi alla sua meta! Più su!... A destra!... Fermo! Io stesso per primo voglio Stendere a terra lo sposino!" Il cosacco punta, Mira con precisione, alza il cane E colpisce al cuore il Voivoda.
