Zaudernd löst sich die Nacht von der Erde, langsam läßt sie die Weiten los, alles Dunkel entweicht in die Wälder und in der Blüten bergenden Schoß. Und den Falten der Kelche entsteigen schillernde Düfte und schwingen zart, tragen ein Singen durch sterbendes Schweigen auf in dankender Himmelfahrt. Aus dem Dämmer der Morgenschatten gleitet erwachend ein leises Licht. Zwischen den flockigen Engelsflügeln hebt die Madonna ihr Angesicht.

O wie lange litt ich's nun, wie stumm! soll ich denn mein Herz, mein Herz noch töten? War doch dein, nur dein, in Glut und Nöten; weißt warum? - Weil mein Herz so wild, weil es Meere braucht, wenn der Sturm ins Blut mir taucht, weil es deine Tiefen so gefühlt! Doch wenn nun der Frühling wieder sprießt - o, ich fühl's, ich fühl's, so stumm ich blieb - und im warmen Sturm der junge Trieb schwillt und schießt: wird mein Herz so wild, weil es Meere braucht, wenn der Sturm ins Blut mir taucht, weil es so in alle Weiten fühlt! Hast es doch gewußt! damals im Mai: als uns auf der Bergwand der Blitz umlohte, als ich jauchzte und dem Donner drohte, adlerfrei: gabst mir deine Hand, mein in Glut und Schmerz, sankest mir ans wilde Herz, unten glänzte fern das deutsche Land. Und wenn nun der Frühling blühen will und die herrlichen Blitze wieder glühn und im Sturm die Meere wieder sprühn: dann - o still - gieb mir deine Hand, Einmal noch ein Schmerz, Einmal noch ein deutsches Herz, dann leb wohl, mein Weib, mein Vaterland!
