Ich hörte heute morgen am Klippenhang die Stare schon, sie sangen wie daheim, und doch war es ein andrer Ton, Und blaue Veilchen blühten auf allen Hägeln bis zur See. In meiner Heimat Feldern liegt in den Furchen noch der Schnee. In meiner Stadt im Norden stehn sieben Brücken, grau und greis, an ihre morschen Pfähle treibt dumpf und schütternd jetzt das Eis. Und über graue Wolken es fein und engelslieblich klingt. Und meiner Heimat Kinder verstehen, was die erste Lerche singt.

Sitz hin im Sessel, ruhsam breit, gönn dir ein Erden weilchen Zeit, und halte mit beim Abendwein, den wir den sanften Menschen weihn. (O seht, - wo seine Lippe lag, das Glas hat silbernen Beschlag!) Ein Körnchen Mohn wirf in den Trunk, dann macht der Schlaf uns tief und jung. Doch laß die Seele unverwirrt, genug, daß sie den Tag durchirrt. Die Bücher segne und das Brot, ist eins uns wie das andre Not. Nun geht er schon, sein Weg ist weit, und zugemessen ihm die Zeit. Vorm Fenster raschelt Nachtgetier, der Spiegel träumt, bald träumen wir.
