Es war, als hätt' der Himmel,
Die Erde still geküßt,
Daß sie im Blütenschimmer
Von ihm [nun]1 träumen müßt.

Die Luft ging durch die Felder,
Die Ähren wogten sacht,
Es rauschten leis die Wälder,
So sternklar war die Nacht.

Und meine Seele spannte
Weit ihre Flügel aus,
Flog durch die stillen [Lande]2,
Als flöge sie nach Haus.

Lieb Seelchen, laß das Fragen sein:
"Was wird der Frühling bringen?"
Lichtgrünes Gras, Waldmeisterlein
Und Veilchen vor allen Dingen.

Auch Herzeleid und Frauenhuld
Gedeiht in diesen Tagen,
Ein bisschen Glück, ein bisschen Schuld,
- Lieb Seelchen, laß das Fragen!

Lass uns toll durch's Leben jagen!
Nicht entbehren, nicht entsagen,
     Nicht nur nippen
     Mit den Lippen
Aus der Freude kargem Becher,
Nein, lass uns wie durst'ge Zecher
     Schlürfen rasch in ganzen Zügen
     Aus der Wonne vollen Krügen!

Nur dem Heute, nie dem Morgen
Gelte unser ganzes Sorgen!
     Und der Wonnen,
     Die verronnen,
Hold Gedächtnis soll uns lehren,
Dass für unser Lustbegehren
     Immer neue Blumen spriessen,
     Immer neue Quellen fliessen!

Lass uns niemals bang erwägen,
Dass im Maass allein der Segen,
     Nie durch denken
     Uns beschränken,
Sondern in bacchant'schen Freuden
Uns're junge Kraft vergeuden,
     Küssen, bis die Lippen bluten,
     Untergehn in Liebesgluten!

So, in Meteorenweise,
Wollen uns're Flammengleise
     Wir durch's Leben
     Leuchtend weben,
Und der Tod mit seinen Schrecken
Soll uns keine Furcht erwecken:
     Lustvereint im letzten Kusse
Winken wir ihm selbst zum Grusse!
