In des Lenzes schönen Tagen

Language: German (Deutsch)

In des Lenzes schönen Tagen
Wo die Rose lieblich blüht,
Hört' ich im Hollunderstrauche
Nachtigall dein süßes Lied.

Ach du sangest von der Heimath,
Von dem trauten Vaterhaus,
Klagtest leise daß wir zogen
In die weite Welt hinaus.

Riefst mit deinem Zaubertone
Mir der Kindheit Lust zurück,
Und noch einmal -- doch im Traume --
Fand ich das verlor'ne Glück!

The nightingale

Language: English after the German (Deutsch)

In the beautiful days of spring
When the rose is blooming so charmingly,
In the elderbush I heard,
Nightingale, your sweet song.

Ah, you sang about my homeland,
About the snug parental home,
You lamented softly that we were departing
To go out into the wide world.

With your magical sound you recalled
To me the joys of my childhood,
And once more -- but in a dream --
I found my lost happiness!
