Die lange Winternacht will nimmer enden
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Die lange Winternacht will nimmer enden;
Als käm' sie nimmermehr, die Sonne weilet;
Der Sturm mit Eulen um die Wette heulet;

The long winter's night
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The long winter's night does not seem to want to end;
As if nevermore to return, the sun tarries;
The storm howls in competition with the owls;
The weapons rattle upon on the rotting walls.
And open graves disgorge their spirits:
Circling about me, they wish
To frighten my soul so that it never recovers;-
But I am resolved not to look at them.
The day, the day, I wish to proclaim it loudly!
Night and ghosts shall flee before it:
The morning star already announces its coming.
Soon it shall be light, even in the deepest vales:
The world shall be suffused with radiance and colour,
The limitless distance with a deep blue.
