from Volkslieder (Folksongs)
Translation by Siegfried Kapper (1821 - 1879)

Ranko schläft, der schöne Knabe
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Serbian (Српски)
Ranko schläft, der schöne Knabe,
Unter grünem Apfelbaume.
Mädchen drei vorübergehend
Sprechen also aneinander:
"Was wohl wär' das Liebste Jeder?"

Von den Dreien spricht die Ältste:
"Mir des Knaben goldes Ringlein!"

Von den Dreien spricht die Mittle:
"Mir des Knaben seidner Gürtel!"

Doch die Jüngste spricht von Allen:
"Mir der Knabe Ranko selber!
Goldner Ring muß einmal brechen,
Seidner Gürtel einmal reißen,
Ewig mein bleibt, was ich liebe!"
