Provençalische Lied
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Am Strande der Dürançe
In blühender Provençe,
Da ragt im Sonnenglanze
Des Vaters Schloß empor.
Mich hat der Sturm verschlagen,
Es bringt der Eltern Klagen
Kein Hauch aus West getragen
Zu der Gefangnen Ohr.
Ob noch zu Kirchenhallen
Die Frommen gläubig wallen,
Ob noch die Glocken schallen
Ins Land den Festesgruß?
Weh mir, daß ich mit Tücken
Der Männer Herz berücken,
Mit frevelndem Entzücken
Zum Mord sie locken muß.
O grünt ihr noch, Oliven,
Wo wir am Mittag schliefen,
Wenn kühl in blauen Tiefen
Gerauscht der Rhone Flut?
Stumm ring ich meine Hände,
Nie hat mein Gram ein Ende,
Es schmachtet Melisende
In Ostens Todesglut.

Lied from the Provence
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
At the beach of the Durance river,
In the beautiful Provence,
My father’s castle towers
In the bright sunshine.
I am far away,
My parents are worried,
The convict has not
Heard from the West.
Do the believers still
Go to church,
Do the bells still announce
The solemn ceremony?
Poor me, I have to change
The men’s hearts,
I have to encourage them to kill
With bad enchantment.
O olive trees are you still growing,
Where we used to sleep at midday,
When the cool blue
Rhone went past?
Silently, I pray,
My grief will never come to an end,
Melisande languishes
In the Eastern fervour of death.
