Die Entgleisten
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): CAT ENG FRE
O fröhliche Jugend, wie wurdest du fremd!
Wir haben so lange gefeiert,
Die Tage verbummelt, die Nächte verschlemmt
Und für Geld unsre Lieder geleiert.
Zu spät! Es führt keine Brücke mehr
Zur seligen Insel hinüber,
Die Zeit der reuigen Wiederkehr
Des verlorenen Sohns ist vorüber.
Zu spät! - So segelt vom Sturm gepackt
Das Schiff der entgleisten Gesellen
Mit Tanzmusik und mit Flittern beflaggt
Ohne Steuer über die Wellen.

Those who went off the rails
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Oh joyful youth, how estranged you became!
We celebrated so long,
We idled away the days, caroused through the nights
And droned out our songs for money.
Too late! No bridge goes any longer
Over to the blessed island,
The time for the penitent return
Of the prodigal son is past.
Too late! Thus, in the grasp of the storm,
With dance music and adorned with flags of tinsel,
The ship of the comrades who went off the rails
Sails rudderless over the waves.
