Son visage rit au cœur de la fontaine et l'ombre pâlit sous les noirs orangers. Nul bruit, si ce n'est le faible bruit de l'onde fuyant goutte à goutte au bord des vasques rondes, ou le bleu frisson d'une brise d'été, furtive parmi des palmes invisibles... Je sais, ô jardin, vos caresses sensibles et votre languide et chaude volupté ! Je sais votre paix délectable et morose, vos parfums d'iris, de jasmins et de roses, vos charmes troublés de désirs et d'ennui... ô jardin muet ! -- L'eau des vasques s'égoutte avec un bruit faible et magique... J'écoute ce baiser qui chante aux lèvres de la Nuit.

Nächtiger Garten von Stille erfüllt, dort wo sich der volle Mond auf feinen, golddurchwirkten Schleiern wiegt; Nah scheint er und zugleich so fern … Sein Antlitz lacht im Herzen der Fontäne, Schatten verschwimmen im dunkeln Orangenhain. Kein Ton, es sei denn leises Plätschern einer Welle, die vom Rand des runden Beckens tröpfelt, oder das blaue Zittern einer Sommerbrise, die heimlich zwischen unsichtbaren Palmen weht… Ich weiß, ihr Gärten, von eurem feinen Kosen und eurer lässig glühenden Sinnlichkeit! Ich kenne euren trefflichen, unwirschen Frieden, den Duft nach Iris, Rosen und Jasmin, den Zauber, der von Lust und Überdruss verstört… Ach, stummer Garten! — Das Wasser tropft vom Brunnenbecken zaubrisch leise … Ich lausche diesem Kuss, der auf den Lippen singt der Nacht.
