Einst sass ich in silbernem Mondenglanz,
Mir wehten die Locken im Ringeltanz,
Ich dacht' an der Minne Qual und Lust,
Gleich klang es mir leise, tief in der Brust,
Und wie ich die Klänge fügte und schied,
Ward d'raus ein Lied.

Ich sang das Lied dann jeglichen Tag,
Ich sang's in der Hütt' und beim Fürstengelag,
Und Allen perlten die Tränen mild,
Und Jeder umschloss sein Liebesbild,
Nur ich, ich weinte still und allein
In die Harfe hinein.

Nun sitz' ich wieder im Mondenstrahl,
Die Haare silbern, das Antlitz fahl,
Denk' wieder der Minne Qual und Lust,
Gleich wird mir so leer und so öde die Brust,
Und wild in die Saiten ruf' ich hinein:
Allein, allein!

Une fois, j'étais assis dans un clair de lune argenté,
Mes boucles flottaient dans la ronde,
Je pensais au chagrin d'amour et à la joie,
Aussitôt cela résonna doucement, profondément dans ma poitrine,
Et comme je disposais les sons et les démêlais,
Un chant en sortais.

Je chantais ce chant alors chaque jour,
Je le chantais dans la hutte et au banquet du prince,
Et des larmes douces perlaient à tous,
Et chacun embrassait sa bien-aimée,
Sauf moi, qui pleurais en silence et seul
Dans la harpe.

Maintenant je suis assis au clair de lune,
Les cheveux argentés, le visage pâle,
Je pense à nouveau au chagrin d'amour et à la joie,
Aussitôt ma poitrine est pour moi si vide et si triste,
Et dans les cordes, je crie sauvagement :
