I.
Wenn die Mutter mich erschauen tät,
der ich hier noch des Abends spät
mich in Verzweiflung gräme,
sie wäre nicht so weit, so weit
und wäre wohl sogleich bereit
zu kommen, ja sie käme!

II.
Wenn Mutter wüßte, daß ihr Sohn
für die Begeisterung den Lohn
des Gleichmuts hat gewonnen,
sie hätte längst das ferne Land
gefunden, das er frostig fand,
um ihn mit Trost zu sonnen.

III.
Wenn Mutter wüßte, daß ich heint,
die müden Augen rot geweint,
sie täte sich erbarmen.
Sie flöge zu mir her geschwind
und trüge fort ihr krankes Kind,
in ihren Mutterarmen.

Prerequisite
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I.
If Mother could see me,
[Could see] how late at night
I still fret in despair here,
She would not be so far away, so far
And would immediately be ready
To come; yes, she would come!

II.
If Mother knew that her son
Had for his enthusiasm
Traded the reward of equanimity,
She would long have found that distant land
That he found frosty, in order to let
The sunshine of her comfort shine upon him.

III.
If Mother knew that today
I wept until my tired eyes were red,
She would take pity upon me.
She would quickly fly to me
And would carry her sick child
Away in her motherly arms.
