Wie ein Traum
sind die Jahre dahin
meines lachenden Knabenalters,
wie der Flaum
und das Ultramarin
eines flatternden Tagesfalters.
Und ich war
doch ein munteres Kind,
voller lebhaften Phantasien,
welche klar
ihren Wunsch in den Wind
einer schwankenden Zukunft schrieen.
Wie der Schaum,
der im Sande zerrann,
ist der Leichtsinn leider zerronnen,
nun ich kaum
mich beschuldigen kann,
daß ich jemals zu lachen begonnen!

Insight
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Like a dream
The years have passed,
[The years] of my laughing boyhood,
Like the down
And ultramarine
Of a fluttering butterfly.
And yet
I was a merry child,
Full of lively fantasies,
Which clearly
Screamed their desire
Into the wind of an uncertain future.
Like the foam
That dissipated into the sand,
My levity has unfortunately dissipated,
Now that I can hardly
Reproach myself
For ever beginning to laugh!
