You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

Rückblick

Language: German (Deutsch)

Es brennt mir unter beiden Sohlen,
Tret' ich auch schon auf Eis und Schnee.
Ich möcht' nicht wieder Athem holen,
Bis ich nicht mehr die Thürme seh'.

Hab' mich an [jedem]1 Stein gestoßen,
So eilt' ich zu der Stadt hinaus;
Die Krähen warfen Bäll' und Schloßen
Auf meinen Hut von jedem Haus.

Wie anders hast du mich empfangen,
Du Stadt der Unbeständigkeit!
An deinen blanken Fenstern sangen
Die Lerch' und Nachtigall im Streit.

Die runden Lindenbäume blühten,
Die klaren Rinnen rauschten hell,
Und ach, zwei Mädchenaugen glühten! -
Da war's geschehn um dich, Gesell!

Kömmt mir der Tag in die Gedanken,
Möcht' ich noch einmal rückwärts sehn,
Möcht' ich zurücke wieder wanken,
Vor ihrem Hause stille stehn.

Katson taaksepäin

Language: Finnish (Suomi) after the German (Deutsch)

Jalkapohjieni alla polttaa
vaikka kävelenkin jään ja lumen päällä.
En tahtoisi pysähtyä hengähtämään,
niin kauan kuin kaupungin tornit näkyvät.

Olen törmännyt jokaiseen kiveen,
niin kiiruusti riensin pois kaupungista;
Ilkeät varikset tahrivat hattuni
jokaisen talon kohdalla.

Miten toisin otitkaan minut vastaan,
sinä häilyväinen kaupunki!
Kirkkaaksi pestyillä ikkunoillasi lauloivat
leivonen ja satakieli kilpaa.

Pyöreät lehmukset kukkivat,
kirkkaat virrat solisivat raikkaasti,
ja voi, kaksi tytönsilmää säteili. –
Silloin sinä olit myytyä miestä, ystäväni!

Kun se päivä palaa mieleeni,
tahtoisin vielä kerran muistella menneitä,
tahtoisin hoiperrella takaisin,
seistä hiljaa hänen kotinsa edustalla.
