by Li-Song-Flu (b. 1870)
Translation by Hans Bethge (1876 - 1946)

Traurige Frühlingsnacht
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Chinese (中文)
Geschrei der silbernen Fasanen
Klang melancholisch durch die Nacht,
Ich spielte dir auf meiner Flöte
Ein Lied, das auch nicht fröhlich war.

In dumpfer Trauer lag die Erde,
Wir wußten keinen Grund zu nennen,
Daß unsre Augen überflossen, -
Das Leben war wie Blei in uns.

Uns war so bange wie den Blumen,
Du ließest deine Hände hängen,
Du sahst mich an und sprachest müde:
"Sei still, es wird vorübergehn."

Confirmed with Hans Bethge, Die chinesische Flöte, Insel Verlag, 1918, page 95.
