So schrittest du vorüber diese Nacht

Worauf ich tiefen Sinnes heimwärts lenkte;
und alsobald -- des Schlummers harrte ich --
erhub es sich wie neben meinem Lager
und war wie eine Stimme, welche klagte
und klagte laut die ganze schwere Nacht.

Thus you strode past this night

Language: English after the German (Deutsch)

Thus you strode past this night
when the shadows concealed me from your glances:
   in a swarm of people you returned from the loud celebration,
   and all the streets echoed with your steps,
   and you neared and smiled, and swaying
   and exchanging dialogue in the swarm,
   and your white garments shine forth
   and shine through the night and beckon onward
   and all sink and sink away darkly,
   and a laugh still rang out and strayed about and vanished.
Thus you strode past this night
when the shadows concealed me from your glances.

Whereupon I wended my way homeward, pondering deeply;
and immediately -- I was waiting for slumber --
something arose beside my bed
and was like a voice that lamented
and lamented loudly the whole burdensome night.
