Des Mönches Abschied von den Geleite Gebenden
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Gehet nun, gehet nun fort!
Lasset mich schließen die Tür!
Sehet, ich zeichne ein Kreuz
Euch in die Lüfte nach.
Oben mein Fenster noch schaut
Eueren Wegen drein.
Freunde, wo ihr euch trennt,
Letztes Mal blicket zurück!
Abendlich grüßenden Blick
Nehmet von meinem Berg!
Auge füll Auge mit Licht,
Daß es sich immer erkennt.
Scheidende Rede im Ohr
Bleibe Gedenkens Musik.
Hören wir wieder den Ton,
Ist er geworden zum Lied.

The monk's farewell from those who accompany him
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Go now, go on your way.
Let me close the door.
Look, I am making a sign of the cross
on the breeze after you.
My window overhead still looks
down onto your paths.
Friends, where you part from one another,
look back for the last time.
In the evening, take my greeting gaze
from my mountain.
May my eye fill yours with light,
so that it always recognizes itself.
May my parting speech remain
in your ear like memory’s music.
When we hear the tone again,
it has become a song.
