Es glühten rings die Felder
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Es glühten rings die Felder
Im heißen Sonnenbrand,
Da stand ich auf dem Berge
Am külen [sic] Waldesrand.
Die Glocken hört' ich tönen,
Sah einen schwarzen Zug,
Der einen müden Pilger
Zur Ruhestätte trug.
Den Sarg ließ man hernieder,
Deckt ihn mit Erde zu --
Der findet in dem Grabe
Die längst ersehnte Ruh.

The fields glowed round about
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The fields glowed round about
In the hot burning of the sun,
I stood upon the mountain
By the cool edge of the forest.
The bells I heard a-tolling,
Saw a black procession,
In which a tired pilgrim
Was being borne to his resting place.
They let the coffin down,
Covered it with soil --
In the grave he shall find
The rest long yearned for.
