Am Abend, wenn wir auf dunklen Pfaden gehn,
Erscheinen unsere bleichen Gestalten vor uns.
Wenn uns dürstet,
Trinken wir die weißen Wasser des Teichs,
Die Süße unserer traurigen Kindheit.
Erstorbene ruhen wir unterm Hollundergebüsch,
Schaun den grauen Möven zu.
Frühlingsgewölke steigen über die finstere Stadt,
Die der Mönche edlere Zeiten schweigt.
Da ich deine schmalen Hände nahm
Schlugst du leise die runden Augen auf,
Dieses ist lange her.
Doch wenn dunkler Wohllaut die Seele heimsucht,
Erscheinst du Weiße in des Freundes herbstlicher Landschaft.

Le soir, quand nous allons sur d'obscurs sentiers,
Nos silhouettes blêmes apparaissent devant nous.
Lorsque nous avons soif
Nous buvons les eaux blanches de l'étang,
La douceur de notre triste enfance.
Exténués nous reposons sous le sureau,
Regardant les mouettes grises.
Des nuées de printemps montent au-dessus de la sombre ville
Qui dissimule les temps plus nobles des moines.
Quand je pris ta petite main
Tu ouvris doucement tes yeux ronds,
Il y a bien longtemps de cela.
Pourtant lorsqu'une sombre harmonie envahit l'âme,
Tu apparais, blanche épiphanie dans le paysage automnal de l'ami.
