Nichts kann auf Erden
[Verglichen]1 werden
Des Schäfers Lust,
Auf grünen Heiden,
Verblümten Weiden
Gibt's wahre Freuden,
Mir ist's bewußt.
Bei kühlen [Bronnen]2,
Bei heißer Sonnen
Bestrahlet sein,
Ohn' Furcht der Waffen
[Im Grünen schlafen,
Bei meinen Schafen]3
Ist Freud' allein.
Bald geh' ich [leiren]4,
Bald wieder feiren
Durch tiefe Tal,
Dann muß ich springen
Mich ganz aussingen,
Tut wiederklingen
[Der Echo]5 Schall.
Ums Schäferleben
Soll man gern geben
Ich weiß nicht was,
Ich tausch' mit keinem
Und schlaf' bei meinen
Herzliebsten Schäfchen
Im [grünen]6 Gras.

Nothing on earth
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Nothing on earth
can be compared
with a shepherd’s joy;
on the green heath,
the blossoming pastures,
there’s true joy,
I am aware.
By cool springs,
by warm suns
to be radiated,
without fear of weapons
in the green field to sleep
with my sheep
is a joy in itself.
Once I go out playing a hurdy-gurdy,
another time I’m celebrating
through the deep valley,
then I have to dance,
singing my heart out,
I make again ring
the echo’s sound.
In exchange for a shepherd’s life,
one might willing give –
I don’t know what.
I trade with no one,
and I sleep with my
heart’s dear sheep
in the [green]1 grass.
