Es war im Dorfe Hochzeit
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Es war im Dorfe Hochzeit,
Die Gäste schmausten und sprangen,
Da kam zu dem frohen Feste
Auch ein alter Sänger gegangen.
Hei! was man dem jungen Paare
Für reiche Geschenke beschied!
Der Sänger brachte zum Feste
Nichts als ein kleines Lied.
Das Hochzeitspaar und die Gäste
Sind längst im Grabe verdorrt -
Verwittert sind alle Geschenke,
Das Lied lebt immer noch fort!

There was a wedding in the village
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
There was a wedding in the village,
The guests feasted and sprang about dancing.
Along to the joyful celebration
There came also an old musician.
Ha! what rich gifts were bestowed
Upon the young couple!
The musician brought only
A little song to the celebration.
The wedding couple and the guests
Have long shrivelled in their graves -
All the gifts are worn out,
[But] the song still lives on!
