Der Steinklopfer

Er sitzt am Weg und klopft die harten Steine . . .
Die Straße staubt in weißer Sonnenglut . . .
Kein Mensch ist nahe. 

Im schmalen Schatten einer Pappel ruht
Sein stilles Weib, den Sohn an junger Brust,
Und atmet leise. 

Eintönig hallt sein harter Hammerschlage.
Nur manchmal schaut er stumm auf seine beiden
Mit nasser Stirn.

Aber aus seinem Klopfen klingt viel Glück.
