Ein Greis trat lächelnd mir entgegen, Bot mir die Hand gedankenvoll Und hob sie dann empor zum Segen, Der sanft vom Himmel niederquoll; Und ich empfand es tief im Herzen, Daß Zorn der Donner Gottes nicht; Daß aus der Weste leichten Scherzen Wie aus Gewittern Liebe spricht. Und einen Labebecher trank ich Und schlich, wohin die Ruh mich rief, Hinaus zur Scheune; müde sank ich Hier in des Heues Duft -- und schlief. Was mich erfreut auf meinen Wegen, Das träumt ich nun im Schlafe nach; Und träumend hört ich, wie der Regen Sanft niederträufelt' auf das Dach. Süß träumt es sich in einer Scheune, Wenn drauf der Regen leise klopft; So mag sichs ruhn im Totenschreine, Auf den die Freundeszähre tropft.
