Wirthstöchterleins Klage
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Du trägst an deiner rechten Hand
Von Golde einen Reifen.
Darinnen sitzt ein Blutrubin,
Der leuchtet wie ein Funken. --
O weh, ich liess dich weiter zieh'n,
Eh' du den Ring vertrunken."

Lament of the tavern‑keeper's daughter
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A lad departed from the White Steed;
He wanted to go wandering far away.
The blonde daughter of the tavern-keeper
Saw the wanderer off.
And as he turned the corner
Never to return,
The maiden took out her linen kerchief
And dried her tears.
"You are somehow driven to wander
And to ramble from country to country.
Upon your right hand you wear
A ring of gold.
In it is set a blood-red ruby,
Which glows like a spark. --
Oh woe, I let you travel on
Before you had sold the ring and drunk up the proceeds."
